About us
We are a small, friendly, and active club with a distinguished record within the local region. We started life as the De Havilland club based at Leavesden airfield, north of Watford, but a number of industrial mergers resulted in us eventually becoming the “Rolls-Royce - Leavesden” club. In 1993 when RR closed the factory we became independent under the XRR designation. Membership is open to all and is drawn from between north London and Luton.
We meet on Wednesday evenings from early September to the end of May in a hall, on the first floor of the Stanborough Centre, 609 St. Albans Road, Garston, Watford WD25 9JL (excepting the occasional ‘away’ fixture). See Programme for details. The Centre has its own illuminated off-street parking for 100+ vehicles.
We have a programme of lectures, digital workshops and regular competitions for both prints and projected digital images. We take part in many inter-club activities, some with individual clubs and some as part of the local inter-club leagues.
All our members are happy to pass on their extensive and varied knowledge to new members, whether it be camera technique, traditional film processing or digital manipulation and printing.
We began a series of digital workshops demonstrating the use of Adobe Photoshop software for the preparation and manipulation of photo images in 2004. In 2005, with the aid of a grant from the Lottery “Awards for All” scheme, we were able to acquire digital projection equipment. With this new equipment our workshops were extended to include digital audio-visual sequences. Our digital projector has since been upgraded.
Apart from taking part in CACC organised competitions and exhibitions and one-to-one events with other clubs, individual members enter their work in many other exhibitions. Each year we also produce exhibitions of prints for display in local centres.
In both 2003, 2005 and 2012, we represented the CACC in the PAGB national print competition and in 2008 we represented them in both the national slide and national print championships. In 2011 we represented them in the PAGB national projected image championships.
In 2009 we won the prestigious CACC Rosebowl competition.
For 25 years we ran a Day of Photography, called Pre Visions. It involved many other clubs in competitions and a print exhibition followed by an evening lecture by eminent speakers from the photographic world. Sadly, we had to stop it after the 2010 event, our 25th, and replace it with a new event called VISIONS which has projected digital image competitions open to both individual photographers and clubs. The date for Visions 2015 will be published soon.
